The process to find a replacement for fired Bafana Bafana coach Ephraim “Shakes” Mashaba will begin in earnest next week, with the new coach expected to start work in March.
SA Football Association (Safa) chief executive Dennis Mumble said on Wednesday that the association has not spoken to anyone yet about the vacant post. “That would have been unethical, as there was still a coach in place,” Mumble said.
“We have not approached anyone. We have not even had private discussions with anyone. I have not responded to any representative or agent of any coach. We had decided that we are not going to run what you can call a dirty process -- as the matter was still underway with the former coach,” said Mumble.
Among the names linked to the hot seat are BidVest Wits coach Gavin Hunt, Uganda coach Milutin 'Micho' Sredojevic. and former Iran coach Carlos Quiroz, who previously had a stint at Bafana. Sundowns’ African coach of the year Pitso Mosimane has also been linked to the job but he indicated he was not keen.
“We have not spoken to any coach. We are going to begin that process once we convene the technical committee and I have had my consultation with the president (Danny Jordaan) and the chairperson of the technical committee,” Mumble added.
According to Mumble, the association expects to have the new man by the end of February or early March.
