following a protest by local government workers under the auspices of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) and Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).
Over 1,000 protesters stormed the secretariat at 9am carrying green leaves and singing anti government songs.Their grouse was hinged on government’s failure to pay 2016 leave bonus to them.
Besides the leave bonus, there are still six months outstanding salaries for public servants.
The irate workers forced their way to the office of the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Tunde Atere, but met his absence. They searched everywhere for him.
He drove into their waiting hands and the workers insisted that the cheque for the leave bonus must be signed immediately.
All efforts by the commissioner to persuade them that the money would be paid soon proved abortive.
Atere agreed to take the file to Governor Ol Eniayewu for approval..
